Many people in the RHC community recognize the Ron Nelson Award, presented annually by the National Association of Rural Health Clinics (NARHC) to honor individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, service, and advocacy on behalf of RHCs.
What many may not realize is that Ron L. Nelson, PA-C was also the founder of Health Services Associates (HSA). Ron started HSA in rural West Michigan with a simple but powerful mission: to promote access to healthcare in rural and medically underserved communities. That mission remains at the heart of everything HSA does today.
A respected clinician, advocate, and policy expert, Ron became one of the most influential voices in rural healthcare. He co-founded NARHC and served as its first president, helping establish an organization that continues to advocate for RHCs nationwide. Throughout his career, he testified before Congress, served on numerous state and national commissions, and became widely recognized for his expertise in reimbursement, payment policy, and rural healthcare access.
Yet those who knew Ron best often remember something else. They remember his unwavering belief in people, communities, and the importance of showing up each day ready to make a difference.
Today, visitors to HSA’s office in Fremont, Michigan are greeted by a phrase that remains painted on the wall:
“Every day is a good day.”
For Ron, this wasn’t about ignoring challenges. Rural healthcare has never been easy. Clinics face regulatory changes, workforce shortages, reimbursement pressures, and growing community needs. Instead, the phrase reflected an outlook rooted in optimism, resilience, and purpose.
At HSA, that philosophy continues to shape how we work. It influences how we support clients navigating complex regulations. It guides how we approach partnerships. It reminds our team to remain steady during difficult situations and focused on long-term success.
